Our story begins with Anita & Vicente Padilla. In the 1950s, the Padillas emigrated from the state of Jalisco in Mexico and arrived in the Mission District of San Francisco. The Padillas raised 9 children, Susanna, Dolores, Trina, Rodolfo, David, Ricardo, Arturo, Leticia and Margarita.
In the 70s, Susanna opened New Central Cafe on 14th St. & South Van Ness in the Mission. She decided to share the recipes of her family and Jalisciense cuisine with the neighborhood. As time progressed, her parents and siblings began to help out as New Central Cafe became an institution for many in the Mission. Anita & Vicente eventually took over the day-to-day operations.
In the 80s, Anita and Vicente opened Chavaz on 18th St. & Shotwell. Conveniently located across Local 261, Chavaz's business grew at a rapid pace. Chavaz became best known for its birria/goat dishes. Dolores Padilla Reyes became much more involved in the restaurant as business grew. Known as "Josie" by her childhood friends, she became the recognizable friendly face of the business. Anita & Vicente passed New Central Cafe on to "Josie" and Chavaz was sold to another restauranteur.
By 1988, "Josie" decided to move the business over to 20th St. & South Van Ness.
The present restaurant at this location had the name Los Jarritos from 1988 until 2010. Josie selected this name because of the importance of "jarritos," little ceramic jars, in the Jalisco history and culture and in her family when she was a child in Mexico. These jarritos were used as decorations throughout her home as well as for more practical functions, like drinking all sorts of beverages.
Just before opening the restaurant at its present location, Josie and her husband Francisco Reyes drove from Jalisco to San Francisco with a car-load of these "jarritos." Jarritos evoke many significant family and childhood emotions and memories for Josie, and are part of her very essence. The restaurant has always had, and still has, dozens of these "jarritos" of all sizes and colors adorning the walls. With a tremendous amount of love and support from the Mission community, the Reyes fought a legal battle over almost five years with an international corporation over their right to use the name "Los Jarritos." However, in 2010, the Reyes family reached a settlement and agreed to change its name. In 2010, the restaurant changed its name to SanJalisco. The name is an homage to its Jalisco roots in Mexico and the Padilla and Reyes family's beginnings in San Francisco. SanJalisco's rich tradition will be continued with the next generation. Sons Vicente, Francisco (Kiko), Alfonso (Chicken), Daughter Anita Sophia, and Daughter-in-law Veronica and work at the restaurant and Dolores and Francisco's grandchildren make special appearances from time to time.

En los años 50's los Padillas emigraron desde el estado de Jalisco, México para radicarse en el Distrito de la Misión en San Francisco, California. Aquí los Padillas criaron a sus 9 hijos: Susanna, Dolores, Trina, Rodolfo, David, Ricardo, Arturo, Leticia y Margarita.
En los años 70's, Susanna abrió el New Central Café en la esquina de las Calles 14 & South Van Ness en la Misión. Su intención era de compartir las recetas Jaliscienses de su familia con el vecindario. Conforme el restaurante creció, sus padres y sus hermanos se integraron al negocio New Central Café y éste llego a ser lugar de encuentro para muchos en la Misión. Con el tiempo, Anita y Vicente se dedicaron al manejo cotidiano del café.
En la década de los 80's, Anita y Vicente abrieron otro restaurante, Chavas y este lo ubicaron en la esquina de las Calles 18 & Shotwell. Con el sindicato Local 261 a cruzar de la calle, Chavas rápido tuvo aceptación y creció. La birria llego a ser uno de los platillo de mayor popularidad y Chavas llego a ser conocido por su rica birria. En esta época conforme el restaurante creció más Dolores Padilla Reyes se integro más. Conocida simplemente como "Josie", Dolores llego a ser la cara del negocio. Anita y Vicente con el tiempo vendieron el restaurante Chavas y le trasladaron el manejo de New Central Café a Josie.
Para el 1988 Josie decidió mudar el negocio a la esquinas de las calles 20 & South Van Ness. El restaurante ubicado en esta esquina opero con el nombre de Los Jarritos desde el 1988 hasta el 2010. Josie eligió este nombre por la importancia de los pequeños "jarritos" de barro, no solamente en la historia y cultura de Jalisco pero también por los recuerdos de su niñez y sus visitas a México. Estos jarritos los usaba su familia como decoraciones y también de forma práctica para tomar todos tipos de bebidas.
Justamente antes de abrir este restaurante, Josie y su esposo Francisco Reyes manejaron desde Jalisco hasta San Francisco en un carro cargado de jarritos para decorar su nuevo restaurante. Los jarritos evocan muchísimos recuerdos de familia y de niñez para Josie y son algo muy apegado a ella. Hoy mismo estos jarritos aun decoran el restaurante en todos colores y tamaños.
Por más de 5 años, con tremendo amor y apoyo de la comunidad de la Misión, la familia Padilla Reyes peleo una batalla legal contra una corporación global sobre el derecho del uso del nombre "Los Jarritos". Sin embargo, en 2010 la familia Padilla Reyes llego a un acuerdo con dicha corporación y acordó en cambiar el nombre del restaurante.
A partir del 2010, el restaurante antes conocido como Los Jarritos cambio de nombre y ahora se llama SanJalisco. Este nuevo nombre es un homenaje de la familia Padilla Reyes a nuestras raíces Jaliscienses Mexicanas y nuestro nuevo principio en San Francisco, California. La rica tradición culinaria de esta familia seguirá en SanJalisco con la nueva generación Padilla Reyes: hijos, Vicente, Francisco (KiKo) y Alfonso (Chicken) e hija Anita Sophía y nuera Verónica. También los nietos de Dolores y Francisco comparten con los clientes de vez en cuando.
